Start with a properly random secret rather than a typed one

A generated key is stronger than anything a person will invent.

Produce a replacement in the format the system expects

Matching the expected length and alphabet avoids a rejected configuration.

Practical tips

  • Never commit a generated key to a repository. A key in version control is a public key.
  • Set the byte length to whatever the system documents — some libraries accept only particular sizes.

Secret Key Generator — FAQ

How strong are these keys?
Generated from crypto.getRandomValues. A 32-byte hex key offers 256 bits of entropy.
What is a secret key used for?
Signing and verifying, so a receiver can prove a payload came from you and was not altered. It must be shared only with whoever needs to verify.
How long should a key be?
As long as the system supports. Longer keys are not meaningfully slower, so there is rarely a reason to choose a short one outside compatibility constraints.
