When people reach for this tool

Confirm a file arrived without corruption

Comparing checksums is the quickest way to rule out a damaged download.

See at a glance whether two versions differ

Different checksums mean different bytes, which is enough to skip a full comparison.

Produce the checksum an older manifest expects

Archives and installers from earlier eras often specify CRC32.

Practical tips

  • A checksum detects accidental damage, not deliberate tampering. For anything adversarial, use a cryptographic hash.
  • Hash the file you actually received rather than the one you meant to download, since that is the whole point of the check.

What you get

  • MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512
  • Hashes text or whole files
  • Web Crypto, fully local

Checksum Generator — FAQ

What checksum algorithm is used?
A standard CRC32 over the UTF-8 bytes of text or the raw bytes of a file.
What does a checksum detect?
Accidental corruption — a truncated download, a bad sector, an incomplete copy. It is not designed to resist someone deliberately altering the file.
Why use CRC32 rather than SHA-256?
Only when something else specifies it. CRC32 is much faster and far weaker, which makes it a reasonable integrity check but a poor security control.
