When people reach for this tool

Confirm a file arrived unchanged

Hashing the received file and comparing it with the published digest catches corruption or tampering.

Get a stable short value for a string

A hash of the same input is always the same output, which makes it useful as a compact identifier.

Produce a digest an old system expects

MD5 and SHA-1 are still the only options many older systems accept.

Practical tips

  • MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for anything security related. Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 unless you are matching an existing system.
  • A hash cannot be reversed. If you need to get the original text back, hashing is the wrong operation.

What you get

  • MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512
  • Hashes text or whole files
  • Web Crypto, fully local

Hash Generator — FAQ

Is my data safe?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded to any server.
Is it really free?
Every Social-X tool is free, unlimited and works offline.
Which algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 for anything security related, SHA-512 when extra headroom is wanted, and MD5 or SHA-1 only when an older system demands them.
Can a hash be undone?
No. A hash is a one-way fingerprint. The only way to identify the input is to hash a guess and compare, which is exactly why weak algorithms are a problem for passwords.
