When people reach for this tool

Publish a robots file that points at your sitemap

Without one, crawlers have to guess where your pages are.

Keep crawlers away from areas that cannot be indexed

Search parameters, internal search results and staging paths cost crawl budget and produce nothing.

Check a new site before it goes live

A copied robots file from the old site can silently block the new one.

Practical tips

  • Disallowing a URL does not remove it from an index — use a noindex meta tag or header for that. The two do different jobs.
  • One sitemap line at the bottom is all that is needed; list every variant you maintain there.

What you get

  • Clean “Allow all” template or custom rules
  • Sitemap line generated automatically
  • Copy, download or save the output
  • Safe, dependency-free generation

Robots.txt Generator — FAQ

How do I block a crawler?
Use custom rules and add lines such as “User-agent: bingbot” followed by the paths you want to disallow.
Where does robots.txt go?
At the root of your domain, e.g. https://yoursite.com/robots.txt. Put the sitemap line in your file and in Search Console.
Does robots.txt stop a page appearing in search?
No. It controls crawling, not indexing. A blocked page can still be indexed if it is linked from elsewhere, and to remove something you need a noindex directive it can actually read.
What belongs in a sitemap line?
The full URL of your XML sitemap. Adding it means crawlers can find every page without following links across the whole site.
