When people reach for this tool

Make a template output understandable

Minified HTML from a build step or an email tool is unreadable until it is indented.

See an unclosed tag in context

Visual indentation makes a mismatched element obvious in a way a wall of markup never does.

Check a fragment before pasting it somewhere

Indenting a small piece of markup makes a stray attribute or a duplicated class much easier to spot.

Practical tips

  • Formatting does not repair invalid markup. If the structure is wrong, indenting it just makes the mistake easier to see.
  • Scripts and styles are left as they are, so a large inline block will still dominate the output.

What you get

  • Indentation that actually helps you read the markup
  • Preserves comments, scripts and preformatted blocks
  • Handles void elements and self-closing tags
  • Gently tolerates badly nested input without failing

HTML Formatter — FAQ

Will it fix my HTML errors?
It is a formatter, not an HTML validator. It indents what you give it and preserves the exact content. Use it to read code, not to repair it.
Are script contents indented?
Script, style, pre and textarea contents are left as-is so whitespace inside them cannot change behavior.
Will formatting break my markup?
It only adds whitespace between tags. Where whitespace matters — inside a pre tag or a run of inline text — it is left alone.
Can it fix broken HTML?
No. It re-indents what it is given. A missing closing tag needs fixing in the source, not in the formatter.
