When people reach for this tool

Turn a single unreadable line into a readable shape

A minified response tells you nothing at a glance. Indenting it shows the nesting you were looking for.

Find the exact spot where a payload is malformed

A validator reports the line and character rather than leaving you to hunt through a wall of text.

Check a hand-edited settings file still parses

Trailing commas and unquoted keys are easy to introduce by hand and easy to miss by eye.

Practical tips

  • Format before you read, then validate. Validation alone will not tell you where the structure went wrong.
  • If the formatter refuses the input, the JSON is invalid rather than merely ugly — the error position is the useful part.

What you get

  • Format, minify and validate in one place
  • Readable error messages with position info
  • Never crashes on malformed JSON
  • Keyboard shortcuts for common actions
  • Handles reasonably large documents

JSON Formatter & Validator — FAQ

What does the validation error mean?
The “position” points to the character that broke the parse. The most common causes are trailing commas, unquoted keys and missing brackets.
How do I format with Ctrl + Enter?
Click inside the input box and press Ctrl + Enter (Cmd + Enter on Mac). Use Ctrl + Shift + C to copy the output.
Why does my JSON fail to format?
Usually a trailing comma, a single quote instead of a double quote, or an unquoted key. The reported line and character point straight at it.
Does formatting change my data?
Only whitespace and indentation. Keys, values, order and types are left exactly as they were.
