When people reach for this tool
Understand what a code in a log means
A wall of numbers is unreadable until each one is translated into a cause and a next step.
Work out whether the problem is the client or the server
The class of the code tells you which side is at fault before you look at anything else.
Pick the right code for a situation
A wrong code can trigger caches and clients to behave in ways you did not intend.
Practical tips
- The first digit is the class and the rest narrows it down. Learn the class and you already know most of what is going on.
- A 200 with an error message in the body is a common and confusing mistake — check the code first, then the payload.
What you get
- One-click transforms
- Local processing, nothing uploaded
- Free and unlimited
HTTP Status Code Lookup — FAQ
Are all codes covered?
Every standard status code is included, plus some noted WebDAV and unofficial ones.
What do the classes mean?
1xx is interim, 2xx succeeded, 3xx is a redirect, 4xx means the request was the problem and 5xx means the server was.
Why does my API return 200 with an error?
Because the response was sent successfully even though the operation failed. Using a 4xx or 5xx code lets caches, clients and monitoring react correctly.
